Michael Kiwanuka is a British soul musician of Ugandan decent that grew up in Muswell, North London. I stumbled upon this great artist by chance and what a great chance it was. Kiwanuka has been compared to several artists such as Bill Withers, Ottis Redding, Van Morrison and the Temptations. All of who I can hear snippets of their music in his; he has stated as all those just named to be influences as well as The Band, Joni Mitchell, Richie Havens, Pop Staples and Bob Dylan. He worked as a studio musician for several bands around London before making the leap to solo artist, which quickly caught the attention of Communion Records. They released Kiwanuka’s first two EP’s in early 2011, Tell Me a Tale (Isle of Wight Sessions) and I’m Getting Ready. Once those were released with some success, even landing an opening spot on the Adele Live tour and Itunes London Festival, Polydor came a calling that had Kiwanuka inking a deal with them in late 2011. In early December 2012, he will be releasing his first full-length album, Home Again, just in time for Christmas. So, stepping back one second to this Itunes Festival held in London. Why don’t we have that here in the States? I mean Itunes was founded in California. Blows my mind sometimes with the lack of appreciation for the arts in this country. Okay, I’m off my soap box. This year Kiwanuka was included in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 poll and was named the winner on January 6, 2012. He is definitely one that is worth the time. If you like listening to Bill Withers or Van Morrison on a lazy Sunday afternoon or a raining day then you might want to add Michael Kiwanuka to the shuffle. Support the arts. Listen and download.

**UPDATE: Michael Kiwanuka will be performing at SXSW 2012!! Do check him out if you are attending this year and comment on this post and let me know how it was! Hope some of you go! Dates and times are TBD. See Michael’s introductory on their page by clicking on SXSW.
